Medtech deal activity hits record high amid market volatility - medtech deal activity
Since 2023, major conglomerates like GE and Johnson & Johnson have employed spinoffs as a strategic tool to reorganize their portfolios.

Despite facing a tumultuous year marked by stock market volatility, rising inflation, and intense discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, the medical device industry experienced a surge in deal activity. According to EY’s Pulse of the Industry report, the total value of medtech mergers and acquisitions reached a record high, exceeding $130 billion over the 12-month period ending June 30, a significant increase from the $39 billion reported during the same period last year.

Portfolio restructuring and declining valuations

Since 2023, major conglomerates like GE and Johnson & Johnson have employed spinoffs as a strategic tool to reorganize their portfolios. This trend has continued, with Medtronic’s diabetes unit, MiniMed, being spun off as a separate entity in March. Johnson & Johnson plans to divest its orthopedic unit, while Abbott has announced intentions to shed its nutrition business.

According to the report, the total market capitalization of medtech companies declined by nearly 10% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, reaching $1.58 trillion. John Babitt, EY Global MedTech Leader, noted that investors often attribute market-wide declines to the influx of capital into AI and technology sectors. He also stated that many companies have faced downward revisions in their earnings estimates, with Boston Scientific and Abbott recently lowering their sales growth forecasts for 2026.

These factors suggest a deceleration of growth towards the end of 2026. However, investors remain eager to identify the next major opportunity. Significant investments are being made in robotics and brain-computer interface firms. Babitt highlighted the potential of procedures that offer alternatives to traditional drug treatments, such as Medtronic’s and Recor Medical’s renal denervation procedure for hypertension, as well as advances in tumor ablation procedures for cancer treatment.
